Synopsis
A spectacular 3-hour event opened with a flying spaceman. Then came a 40-minute salute to the music of America, followed by a dramatic spectator card event that turned the 92.000-seat stadium into a showcase of 142 national flags of the countries participating in the 1984 Olympic Games. 12,000 athletes gathered on the Coliseum field for the entrance ot the Olympic Flag, Torch and the Flame Lighting ceremony. Among the 20,000 participants were a 1039-voice massed Olympic Choir, 150 Fanfare Trumpeters, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpeters, an 800-plece marching band assembled from colleges across the nation, 500 dancers, a 300-volce Olympic Gospel Choir, 84 pianists at 84 grand pianos, 300 jazzerclsers. A 1262-member drill team from Southern California high schools, a 100-piece Olympic Symphony Orchestra, 150 flower girls throughout the stadium and 284 placard bearers leading In each country of athletes. The Opening Ceremonies finished with the entire stadium, hands and arms linked together, singing "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand."
