Five Masters of the Arts
Doc. Series & Series of Special
Synopsis
The 20th century has been an explosive period in the arts. Advances in mass communications have made them more accessible to the general public; a democratization has occurred. As extraordinary and iconoclastic artists pushed past the boundaries of convention, the arts themselves became part of our everyday lives. Here are five 20th century artists who have had a profound effect on us all: GEORGE BERNARD SHAW, the Irish playwright whose work amused and enraged audiences; PABLO PICASSO, the Spanish painter and sculptor who created a revolution of the eye; JAMES JOYCE, whose novel Ulysses was selected as the greatest English language novel of the 20th century; GEORGE GERSWIN, the American composer who created both popular and classical masterpiece; and GEORGE BALANCHINE, the Russian-born choreographer who transformed the world of dance.
